How to Add an AI Chatbot to Your Squarespace Website

If your Squarespace site gets the same questions every week — pricing, hours, "do you take new clients?" — an AI chatbot can answer them at 2 AM while you're asleep. Here's exactly how to add one, no coding required.

What you need before you start

A chatbot widget (an embed code — just a snippet of text you paste in)

You don't need a developer. You don't need to touch code beyond copy-paste. If you can paste a link into Squarespace, you can do this.

The one gotcha: your Squarespace plan matters

Squarespace only lets you inject custom code on the Business plan and above. If you're on the Personal plan, the Code Injection panel simply won't be there. Your options: upgrade to Business, or switch to a chatbot that installs through a third-party integration instead of an embed code.

Check your plan first: Settings → Billing → Subscriptions. This is the step that trips up most people, and it takes ten seconds to check.

Step 1: Build your chatbot

Sign up for a free-tier chatbot builder. Pick one that gives you an embed widget — most do. The free tiers are genuinely enough to get a working bot answering your FAQs.

The part that matters most isn't the tool. It's what you feed the bot: your services, your prices, your hours, your policies, and the 10–20 questions customers actually ask. A chatbot with your real business knowledge answers like you would. A chatbot without it guesses — and guessing loses customers.

Step 2: Get the embed code

Every chatbot builder has a "publish" or "install" step that hands you an embed snippet. It usually looks like a short block of code starting with <script>. Copy the whole thing.

Step 3: Paste it into Squarespace

Go to Settings → Advanced → Code Injection
Paste the chatbot embed code into the Footer box
Hit Save

That's it. The bot will now load on every page of your site. (Footer placement is the standard move — it keeps the widget from slowing down your page load as much as header placement would.)

Step 4: Test it like a customer, not like the owner

Open your site in a private/incognito window and actually use the bot:

Ask your prices. Ask your hours. Ask the weird questions people really type.
Check it on your phone. More than half your visitors are on mobile, and chatbot widgets sometimes overlap mobile menus or cookie banners. If it looks broken on mobile, adjust the widget position in the chatbot builder's settings.
Try to break it. Ask something it shouldn't know and see what it does — it should hand off to you, not invent an answer.

Step 5: Feed it better answers

The first version of your bot will get some things wrong. That's normal. The fix isn't a better tool — it's better training data. Every time it gives a weak answer, add that question and the right answer to its knowledge base. After a few rounds of this, it stops sounding like a robot and starts sounding like your best employee.

The mistakes that kill Squarespace chatbots

Skipping the mobile test. Looks fine on desktop, covers the whole screen on a phone.
Feeding it nothing. A bot with three FAQ entries is a fancy contact form. Give it everything: services, prices, policies, the weird edge cases.
No fallback. If the bot can't answer, it should say so and offer a way to reach you — not make something up.
Set and forget. Check its conversations once a week for the first month. The patterns in what people ask will tell you exactly what to improve.

What to do in the first 30 days

The install is day one. The next 30 days decide whether the bot earns its keep. Each week, read through the conversation transcripts — Squarespace's dashboard won't show these, so check them in your chatbot builder. You'll notice two or three questions the bot handles badly. Add the correct answers to its knowledge base. By week four, the bot handles your top 20 questions cold, and you'll have spent maybe two hours total on maintenance. That's the whole ongoing cost: two hours a month to keep it sharp.
