How to Add an AI Chatbot to Your Wix Website

Wix makes adding a chatbot easier than most platforms — there's a one-click install path. But there's a trap that eats an hour of every first-timer's evening, and it's avoidable. Here's the full walkthrough.

What you need before you start

A Wix site you can edit
A chatbot account (free tier is fine)
About 45 minutes

No coding. No developer. If you can install a phone app, you can do this.

Method A: The Wix App Market (easiest)

This is the path most people should take.

Open your Wix dashboard and go to the App Market
Search for your chatbot tool by name
Click Add to Site
Follow the setup prompts to connect your chatbot account
The widget appears on your site automatically

The trap: after installing, the widget often doesn't show up. That's because Wix requires you to publish the site before App Market additions go live. The editor preview won't show it. Hit Publish (top right), then open your live site in a new tab. There it is.

This "publish before it appears" step is the number one reason people think the install failed. It didn't. Publish and check.

Method B: Custom embed code (more control)

Some chatbot builders don't have a Wix app. For those, you embed the widget manually:

In your chatbot builder, find the embed/install code (a <script> snippet) and copy it
In Wix, go to Settings → Custom Code (or Tracking & Analytics on older Wix versions)
Click Add Custom Code, paste the snippet
Set it to load on all pages, placed in the body end section
Publish your site

The plan gotcha: custom code embedding requires a premium Wix plan. On the free Wix plan, the Custom Code section is locked. If you're on free Wix, Method A (App Market) is your path — or it's time to upgrade.

What to do right after install

Getting the widget on the page is step one. Step two is making it useful:

Feed it your business knowledge. Your services, prices, hours, location, policies, and the 10–20 questions you actually get asked. Paste your FAQ page in, or upload your service descriptions. A chatbot that knows your business answers like your best employee. One that doesn't is a decorative bubble in the corner.

Set the welcome message. Don't leave the default "Hi! How can I help?" if you can do better. Something specific works harder: "Hey — I can answer questions about pricing, availability, and booking. What do you need?"

Test it on mobile. Wix sites get heavy mobile traffic. Open your live site on your phone, tap the chat bubble, and run through a conversation. If the widget covers your navigation or looks cramped, adjust its position and size in the chatbot builder's appearance settings.

Set a fallback. Tell the bot what to do when it doesn't know something: "I'm not sure about that one — want me to have someone reach out?" plus a way to leave contact info. A bot that admits it doesn't know is trustworthy. A bot that invents answers is a liability.

Free-plan limits worth knowing

Free tiers on chatbot builders are real and usable, but they have ceilings:

Monthly conversation limits. Most free tiers cap you at 50–200 conversations a month. Plenty to start; watch the counter.
Branding. Some free tiers stamp their logo on your widget. Usually removable on paid plans.
One bot, one site. Free tiers often limit you to a single chatbot. That's fine — you only need one.

None of this should stop you from launching. Start free, and you'll know exactly when you've outgrown it because the limits will tell you.

The weekly habit that makes it work

For the first month, spend 20 minutes a week reading your bot's conversation logs. You'll see the same pattern every time: a handful of questions it answers well, and two or three it fumbles. Add the fumbled ones — with the right answers — to its knowledge base. Do this four times and your bot goes from "okay" to genuinely good. Most people skip this. Don't be most people.
