What an intake chatbot does

Three jobs, all valuable:

Qualifies the case type. Personal injury? Family law? Criminal defense? The bot asks, the visitor answers, and by the end you know what kind of matter it is before you've spent a minute.
Captures urgency and contact info. "When did this happen?" "What's the best number to reach you?" — the bot collects it conversationally instead of through a form people abandon halfway.
Books the consultation. If your bot can offer times and lock in a consult, you've automated the single highest-friction step between "interested" and "retained."

What it doesn't do: give legal advice, evaluate case merits, or quote fees for matters it can't see. The bot is intake staff, not an associate.

The intake questions worth automating

Frame these conversationally, not as a form:

What type of legal matter is this? (Practice-area routing — the most important question.)
When did the issue occur? (Urgency and statute-of-limitations awareness.)
Have you worked with an attorney on this before?
What's your name and the best number to reach you?
Would you like to schedule a consultation? (Offer real times.)

Five questions, and your morning starts with qualified, scheduled consults instead of a pile of "please call me back" voicemails.

The compliance part (non-negotiable)

Law is a regulated profession and your chatbot has to act like it knows that:

No attorney-client relationship. The bot's welcome message and fallback responses should make clear it's providing general information and intake assistance — not legal advice, and chatting doesn't create an attorney-client relationship. Put this in the system prompt and in the welcome text.
No case evaluation. The bot never says "you have a strong case" or "you'll win." It collects facts. Evaluation is the attorney's job, after a real consultation.
No fee quotes for unseen matters. "Fee structures vary by matter type — we'll discuss this at your consultation" is the answer, every time.
Conflict-check awareness. The bot should collect the opposing party's name when relevant so your office can run conflicts before the consultation — not after.
Jurisdiction honesty. If someone's matter is outside your practice jurisdictions, the bot should say so rather than book a consult that wastes everyone's time.

Write all of this as explicit instructions in the bot's system prompt, then test it adversarially — ask it for legal advice directly and confirm it declines properly. This is the one part you verify twice.

Setting it up

A bot whose failure list shrinks every month is a bot that's compounding in value.
