Your Website Isn't Getting Leads? 9 Places the Money Leaks Out

Your website gets traffic — Google Analytics says people show up — but the phone doesn't ring and the inbox stays empty. This is the most common small business website problem there is, and it's almost never a traffic problem. It's a leaks problem. Visitors arrive, hit a friction point, and leave. Here are the nine places the money leaks out, in the order you should check them.

1. Nobody can contact you (the #1 killer)

This sounds too stupid to be the top item. It isn't. Check right now:

  • Does your contact form actually send? Email an inbox anyone reads? Test it. Today.
  • Is your phone number a clickable link on mobile? If it's a plain image or text that can't be tapped, half your visitors physically cannot call you.
  • Is there a contact option on every page, or only on the Contact page that 10% of visitors ever see?

A shocking number of small business sites fail one of these. Fix this before reading further.

2. Your homepage doesn't say what you do

"Welcome to our website." "Quality you can trust." "Solutions for tomorrow." If a stranger can't answer "what do they sell and for whom" in five seconds, they're gone. Write the headline like you're explaining it to a neighbor: "Emergency plumber in Denver. We answer 24/7."

3. No clear next step

Every page needs one job. A service page that ends with... nothing. A blog post with no offer. The rule: every page ends with one obvious action — call, quote form, booking link. One, not five.

4. The form asks for too much

Name, email, phone, address, "how did you hear about us," preferred contact time, project details — every extra field costs you completions. For a first touch: name, email, message. That's it. You can ask the rest later.

5. No trust signals

Small businesses win on trust and most sites hide theirs. Reviews (real ones, with names), photos of actual work and actual people, years in business, an address that isn't just a PO box. If a visitor's deciding between you and a competitor, the one that looks like real humans wins.

6. It's slow on a phone

Over half your visitors are on mobile, and mobile visitors are the least patient. Compress the images. Kill the dead plugins. If your site takes more than about three seconds to load on a phone, you're paying for traffic that never sees your offer.

7. Nobody answers after hours

Your best leads browse at 9 PM and on Sunday mornings. If the only path to you is a form that gets answered "within 2 business days," those leads go to whoever answers first. This is where an AI chatbot earns its keep — it answers the 20 questions everyone asks and captures the lead at 11 PM like it's noon.

8. No follow-up capture

Most visitors aren't ready to buy today. If your site has no way to stay in touch — no email signup, no lead magnet, no "get a quote" that captures an address — today's visitor is gone forever. A simple "get our pricing guide" trade for an email address beats nothing by a mile.

9. You're guessing instead of measuring

If you don't know which pages get traffic, where visitors leave, and what your contact rate is, every fix is a guess. Install analytics (it's free), check it monthly, and fix the pages where people actually leave. Data beats opinions.

The 30-minute self-check

Walk through your site on your phone and answer honestly:

  1. Can I tap-to-call in under 10 seconds?
  2. Does the homepage headline say what we sell?
  3. Does every page end with one clear action?
  4. Is the form three fields or fewer?
  5. Are there real reviews and real photos?
  6. Does it load fast?

If you answered "no" to more than two, you don't have a traffic problem — you have a conversion problem, and it's fixable in a weekend.

Stop guessing: get the audit

The Website Audit goes through your site page by page and finds every leak — the broken forms, the confusing pages, the slow loads, the missing trust signals — ranked Critical / High / Medium so you know exactly what to fix first. $49, one time, plain English, no upsell pitch. It's the START HERE move: fix the leaks before you spend another dollar on traffic.
